How Device Reuse Could Benefit SMEs

For businesses with tight budgets and limited resources, IT can be a stressful subject, especially if you’re growing fast and struggling to supply your staff.

One method which can have a significant impact on your tech strategy is device reuse. Not only can it cut your costs and improve your business’ bottom line, it’s also a more sustainable option.

Discover the benefits of reusing your existing devices in this blog!

Cost savings

Reusing your existing devices is a surefire way to cut your upfront IT costs and boost your business’ budget in the long run. Instead of splashing out every time you need a piece of equipment- for example, when there is damage, or when a new employee starts- you can conduct repairs and refurbishments for a fraction of the cost.

Devices can be reused in many areas of your business. As previously mentioned, they can be offered to new starters or movers, and they can be provided to a staff member whilst their device is being repaired or upgraded. Equipment can even be moved and shared between different departments depending on their requirements.

Reduced e-waste

Reusing devices is a way to reduce the amount of e-waste you produce. This is important to consider: global e-waste production is at an all-time high, projected to exceed 74 million metric tonnes by next year. Businesses need to do more to tackle this, especially those of us in the UK, where we have the second-highest global e-waste production rates

Reducing your business’ e-waste is a great way to reduce your carbon emissions, bringing you much closer to your sustainability goals.

Extended lifespan

In prioritising reuse, you’ll invest more into the maintenance of your devices and extend their overall lifespan. This reduces the frequency at which you need to replace end-of-life equipment, keeping costs low.

Making the most of end-of-life

When an asset reaches the end of its useful life (i.e. it is broken beyond repair or there is nowhere for it to be redeployed within your business) there are a few options which continue boosting your sustainability and your budget.

Whilst reuse should be your first option, the next-best method is recycling. You should look for a reputable and responsible partner who aims to salvage as many materials as possible. Ideally you should choose someone who can provide you with a full, transparent audit report for your records.

If the device is still functional, it can be securely wiped, refurbished and sold to another local business. This can be a great source of extra income. Alternatively, you can donate equipment to local charities.

By adopting a reuse-first mindset, you can cut your business’ costs and improve your sustainability. If you don’t have the capacity to store, refurbish and redeploy devices on your own, or you’re not sure where to start implementing reuse, an expert member of our team will be able to help.
